BACKGROUND RESEARCH

PERSONAS

USER SELECTION

Our initial user group was 'yogis' but after user interviews, I suggested our group focus on the relationship between yoga instructors and new students, as it seemed to be a unique connection

Based on the four interviews that our group conducted, we chose to make two separate personas. The first was a relatively new yoga student, and the other was a seasoned yoga instructor.

USER JOURNEY MAP

Based on the interview data, our team created a typical user journey map for new yogi attending a new yoga studio

SKETCHES

IDEATION

I began to sketch ways improve the yoga experience of new yogis. I followed three major design requirements:
  1. Non-invasive technology in yoga areas

  2. Ability to teach new pose positions while in class

  3. Easy to set up and use

I came up with a yoga mat that syncs to a user's phone to download yoga flows and teach users the correct positions and yoga movements.

INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE

After sketching, I realized that our mat design was going to need an accompanying app for users to interact with it.

This design accomplishes 3 major functions:
  1. Downloading a yoga flow to a user's mat

  2. Joining an instructor's pre-made class flow

  3. Creating an individual flow by combining yoga poses

USER TESTING

PHYSICAL PROTOTYPING

To test the mat concept, our team cut out hand and feet and yoga poses and attempted to move the paper prototypes while conducting the user test.

We discovered that:

  1. The users liked the "glowing" hands and feet

  2. They wanted to control when they saw the lit images

  3. Controlling the brightness of the images was important

APP TESTING

After creating an information architecture and low fidelity wire frames, our team conducted user testing with a paper prototype.

We found 2 major themes:

  1. Users found the app easy to use

  2. The conversation part of the app was unnecessary

Based on this feed back, we modified our original user flow to be more concise.
